FES 2024 demonstrates China's continued importance as a fastener production and consumption market.
The 14th Shanghai Fastener Professional Exhibition (FES 2024), held March 20-22 at the National Convention and Exhibition Center, highlighted China's continued importance as both a fastener production center and consumption market. The exhibition attracted domestic and international participants, showcasing the breadth and depth of China's fastener industry.
Exhibition Scale
FES 2024 featured extensive exhibition space showcasing fastener products, manufacturing equipment, and industry services. Chinese fastener manufacturers displayed their capabilities across product categories from standard commodity fasteners to specialized engineered products. The exhibition provided visibility into the scale and sophistication of China's fastener production sector.
Manufacturing equipment suppliers used the exhibition to present the latest machinery and tooling for fastener production. Chinese manufacturers investing in new capacity or capability upgrades evaluated equipment offerings and negotiated purchases. The presence of international equipment suppliers alongside domestic manufacturers reflected China's importance as an equipment market.
Domestic Market Dynamics
China's domestic fastener consumption remained substantial, driven by manufacturing, construction, and infrastructure activity. Despite economic headwinds in property construction, other sectors including automotive, renewable energy, and industrial equipment supported fastener demand. Domestic manufacturers focused on serving these growing application segments.
Automotive fastener demand showed particular strength as Chinese vehicle production reached record levels. Both domestic consumption and export markets supported automotive production, creating corresponding fastener requirements. Electric vehicle production, in which China led globally, drove specialized fastener demand for battery and powertrain applications.
Export Market Challenges
Chinese fastener exporters faced continued challenges from trade measures including anti-dumping duties in various markets. The EU anti-dumping duties on certain Chinese fasteners, in place since 2022, redirected some European sourcing to alternative origins including Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Chinese manufacturers adapted by focusing on markets without trade restrictions.
Trade tensions with the United States also affected Chinese fastener exports. Tariffs imposed during previous trade disputes remained in place, making Chinese fasteners less competitive in the US market. Some Chinese manufacturers established production facilities in Southeast Asia to serve Western markets with reduced trade barrier exposure.
